Background information: Yuugi was born to play games. Even his name means “game”. From the time he was young, there was nothing he liked more with playing with blocks, colouring pictures and getting people to guess what the drawings were of, playing charades, and more.

Yuugi was brought up a muggle. Both of his parents were such, as were three of his grandparents. His grandfather, Sugoroku Mutou, was a squib, but he never shared much of this heritage with his family, since he was an outcast in the wizarding world anyways. Still, it was far from unusual to see something eclectic and not quite muggle within the game shop that he ran. Yuugi became used to this since he lived with this man along with his parents in the space behind and on top of the shop. Needless to say, Yuugi was surprised when he received his letter – the whole family was! However, it seemed as if the magical abilities that had skipped two generations had returned in him.

Since starting Hogwarts, he has been the short one in his year. (A running joke has started that there is one runt in every year, which some other students detest, but Yuugi doesn’t mind.) Unlike other people, however, Yuugi looks quite young for his age. Therefore, those that don’t know him very well often mistake him as a first or second-year, even though he’s more than halfway done his time at school.

Yuugi often has a problem with blending into the crowd. He is shy and very soft-spoken, and his odd (though natural) hairstyle made him a regular target for bullies. He wants to stand out in a positive way, but somehow he always ends up in the back of everyone’s mind and the last one picked for teams and groups. (Not that he always minded, as good as he was at games, sports were never his thing.) He started out wearing buckles and belts when not in uniform (and sometimes even one around the neck when he is) because he thought it would help him stand out more. He still, however, finds himself spending most of the time in the background.

Even though he is often overlooked, those that take the time to get to know him end up gaining a close and valuable friend. He is loyal and true, and would stand up for anyone until the end. Then again, valuing others above himself somewhat, he would probably throw himself in front of anyone to protect them if in need.

Yuugi is now a fifth year student. At an age when people are generally growing out of games as a whole, Yuugi still embraces them. He is often found alone playing solitaire, or trying to convince someone to play another round of wizard chess with him. He has always been a little disappointed that he couldn’t bring video games with him to school, but the world of wizarding games that he has come across has made it all the better.
